Paris. A global centre for gastronomy, home to baguettes, croissants and other irresistible, buttery pastries. In short, a celiacs nightmare. But thankfully the number of Parisian gluten-free eateries and restaurants with gluten free options has steadily increased over the years. Paris sans gluten is now possible. To lend a helping hand, Fast Cover Travel Insurance (which automatically covers celiac disease in their policies, by the way) has put together a list of popular eateries for gluten-free travellers.

Gluten Free Food in Paris

Breizh Café

There are two types of crepes in France. People avoiding gluten should not get crepes sucrees or crepes au froment, which are made with wheat flour. Crepes salees or crepes au sarrasin are made with buckwheat flour and are naturally fluten-free. Some of the most famous buckwheat galettes can be found at Breizh Café. There are a range of fillings to choose from. You can go for a sweet crepe drizzeled with caramel or a savoury crepe filled with options such as cheese, ham and artichoke. Unfortunately the place often has a long line, but that is just a testament to their galettes.

111 Rue Vieille du Temple, 75003, Paris

Thank You My Deer

Thank You My Deer is a small coffee shop that offers a few tasty gluten free options. The menu changes daily though always offers fresh and seasonal food. There is the sandwich of the day to try, the salad of the day as well as a few pastries for dessert including muffins, cookies and biscotti which are gluten-free. Their gluten free bread is also available for purchase by the loaf.

112 Rue Saint-Maur, 75011, Paris

Aux Ducs de Bourgogne

Come on by for another heavenly buckwheat crepe. Both savoury and sweet options that are sure to hit the spot whether you’re celiac or not. The place has a reputation for being very accommodating, so let the owner know you are gluten intolerant and discuss what you should try.

30 Rue de Bourgogne, 75007, Paris

Gluten Free Food in Paris

Bio Sphere Café

Everything in this café is gluten-free and homemade. You will also find that most ingredients are organic. As for gluten free food options, there are freshly baked baguettes, pizzas, pastas, creamy soups, quiches and of course delicious pastries. Bio Sphere is a good choice for those seeking more variety in the gluten-free options they can choose from.

47 Rue de Laborde, 75008, Paris

No Glu

No Glu has become famed for being one of the few 100% gluten free restaurants in France. The food hits that magical mark of not tasting like it is gluten free. There are a range of options from pizzas to soups and the legendary gluten free club sandwich. Be sure to leave room for a sweet pastry to finish and perhaps take a few for your next day trip in Paris.

16 Passage des Panoramas, 75002 Paris

Helmut Newcake

A French bakery that is gluten-free? It sounds strange, but it’s true. Here you can get an éclair, croissant and various other baked goods that are gluten free. Be wary that the place is often crowded because of the treats it delivers. And while there are savoury options, the sweets are the stars of the shop. Try a rhubarb tartlet, pistachio cherry tart or perhaps the chocolate torte.

36 Rue Bichat, 75010 Paris

Gentle Gourmet Café

The Gentle Gourmet Café is a vegan restaurant (that’s right, a French restaurant with no butter) offering lunch and dinner between Wednesday and Sunday. Most dishes are organic and there are a number of gluten free options, including raw salads, a raw lasagne, risotto, a Portobello burger and desserts. The place has a lovely atmosphere and will leave you delightfully full, though be aware that many dishes are on the pricey side.

24 boulevard de la Bastille, 75012 Paris

These cafes and restaurants listed by Fast Cover offer celiac travellers a good meal which won’t come back to bite them. You can eat more than macarons when you’re a celiac in Paris.

Please let us know if you’ve found other gluten-free eateries which can help your fellow traveller!
